Sunday Scribblings: Passion

I have a passion for movies. There are few modes of expression that have such a wide appeal than the images on the silver screen. I grew up on movies, so much so that my first job was at a movie theater. This day I think of that time as one of the best in my life.

As I type this, one of my favorite films is on AMC: Die Hard, the original. With a young, sarcastic Bruce Willis, before he went completely Hollywood—and completely Planet Hollywood. Many great lines and quotes from this movie, like: “Yippee-ki-yay, mother. ….” You know the rest. Here are a few other favorites:

  • “There is no spoon.” The Matrix
  • “I don't want to sell anything, buy anything, or process anything as a career. I don’t want to sell anything bought or processed, or buy anything sold or processed, or process anything sold, bought, or processed, or repair anything sold, bought, or processed. You know, as a career, I don't want to do that.” Say Anything
  • “You're either in or you're out. Right now." Ocean’s Eleven (remake)
  • “An ounce of pretension is worth a pound of manure.” Steel Magnolias
  • “So let it be written. So let it be done." The Ten Commandments
  • “I am big. It's the pictures that got small.” Sunset Boulevard

So for this Sunday Scribblings, share the movie quote or line(s) you’re most passionate about. These are quotes so good they find their way into everyday speech. You say it, and everyone understands. Or you think about it, and you're instantly brought back to a moment in time.

Naturally, I’m awaiting the Academy Awards tomorrow night. I’ll post my picks for the top five categories tomorrow.

Those are some good ones! Funny that you love Die Hard -- one of my husband's favorites. Let's see. . . some random ones that come to mind:

from Shakespeare in Love: "It's a mystery."

from The Princess Bride: "You keep using that word. I don't think it means what you think it means." (and so many other great lines!)

from Death to Smoochy: "I'm sorry if I smell like piss. You know how it is."

from Amelie: "Je suis boulotte de personne."
my favorite (and most used) movie quotes are these--

"You'll have nothing and like it." Caddyshack

"Bueller. Bueller. Bueller." Ferris Bueller's Day Off

Kelli, I resisted putting
"Bueller" on my list, but it's certainly top-ten.

Great lines!

Laini, Princess Bride another one of my favorites.

Love "Inconceivable!"
and "Hello. My name is Inigo Montoya. You killed my father prepare to die."

Cool.

Love that Princess Bride movie and all those quotes in the movie.

Also from Harvey - 'In this world, Elwood, you must be oh, so smart.. or oh, so pleasant. Well for years I was smart.' I recommend pleasant."

From Sabrina with Audrey Hepburn : A woman happily in love, she burns the soufflé. A woman unhappily in love, she forgets to turn on the oven.

There's just so many to list but I like your list also.

Jana,

The Princess Bride is by far my most quoted movie among the others that have been quoted, I like:
"I'm not a witch, I'm your wife"
"Have fun storming the castle!"

Also, Steel Magnolias:
"You know I love ya more'n my luggage"
"You have the handwritin' of a serial killer"

That Say Anything line is probably one of my all-time faves.

There is a random quote from Indiana Jones (the last one) where he had to choose which cup was the holy grail. the ghost told Indy to "choose wisely" and then pointed to someone who was dead and said "he chose, UN-wisely" Jon and I actually use that one a lot!

Here's one of my all-time favorites, from Fargo--not the line itself, but its placement in the film:

There's more to life than a little money, ya know. Don'tcha know that? And here ya are. And it's a beautiful day. Well. I just don't understand it.

Caught a movie on TV last night, "Playing by Heart". Caught this line: "Talking about love is like dancing about architecture". There was a blog with that title (Dancing about Architecture), but I'd not heard the line until now. I'm no good to remember them, but when I hear them again, I say: "Now, THAT was a good line!"

Jana,

I also wrote about movies!
The line I enjoy using the most is from Taxi Driver: "Are you talking to me?!"

Oh, so many favorite lines.

From Empire Strikes Back:

Princess Leia shouts, "I love you!" to Han Solo before he gets frozen in carbonite.

He yells back, dead serious: "I know." FH and I have those lines engraved in our wedding bands (yes, we're Star Wars geeks).

From Better Off Dead:

"Dohrk-head."

B.E., I just saw that Star Wars clip on the Barbara Walters Special.

As for Better Off Dead, "Two dollars. I want my two dollars."

Well, it's not from a movie, it's from a TV show, but anyone in New Zealand will instantly recognize "You're not in Guatemala now, Dr Ropata"

I can't remember the last time I heard a line from a movie that struck me as memorable - I have to face it I guess. My memory just isn't what it used to be. Maybe. But I enjoyed your post!
Ahh, movies. A most excellent thing to be passionate about.

I think one of my favorite lines is from Buffy the Vampire Slayer. It's a line from Paul Reubens, or about Paul... it's been a long time since I've seen the movie. Anyway, it's "Kill him a lot."

Some days, that's just how I feel.

I'm an art teacher and though I know that I have favorite movie quotes the quote that has been stuck in my mouth these days is Tim gunn's " Make It work" quote from Project Runway. I walk around talk to my students about their projects point out the areas that may need some reevaluation for their intention and say..."Make It Work." and they laugh!
