Confession Tuesday

While the Red Sox are losing to the Arizona Diamondbacks (damn that interleague play), seems like a good time to confess this week’s confessions. If you’re participating, leave a post so we can come by to help clear your conscious. And check The Confessional for a list of participants.

I am just sick to death about the Gloucester Girls story that is now a national news item. For those who don’t know, 17 girls at Gloucester High School have become pregnant during the past year (the average number of pregnancies is four). Allegedly, the majority were part of some pregnancy pact to get pregnant and raise their babies together. And the fathers were random donors, for lack of a better word. One of which has been reported as a 24-year-old homeless man.

The town itself is a dichotomy. Big $2 million homes next to people who fish for a living. (I live 20 miles away.) Whether the pact is true or not, it’s just sad that these girls thought that getting pregnant and raising their babies together would satisfy some need in them. It’s just very sad.

Changing subjects.

All is well on the poetry front. I’m submitting work to two places that take previously published poetry (read: poetry published on my blog). I’ve also revised and organized some of my poems for manuscript #2. So while I haven’t been writing, or reading in public, I feel as if I’m making progress on my very large poetry to-do list.

****
Got an e-mail from a fellow poet asking me to write a poem about trash for a documentary he’s filming. Trash—I love the challenge of making trash poetic. Woo hoo!

****

I've said it before and I'll say it again: poets love Facebook.

****

Both Cave Canem and Kundiman are having their retreats this week. Yea!

****

In between innings, my husband and I are switching between the Red Sox game and the movie Beverly Hills Cop. Still holds up over time. Just watched the-banana-in-the-tailpipe scene. Remember how good Eddie Murphy was in this movie and 48 Hours, Coming to America, and Trading Places? So how did he end up at Meet the Klumps? And yes, Dreamgirls was a great movie, which Murphy promptly followed up with Norbit. Hope his luck picking films improves.

****

Prince (as in Prince Rogers Nelson), Michael Jackson, and Madonna turn 50 this year. Oh my, where has the time gone? I feel old.

The Gloucester Girls story is so sad. It just tells me that the information that is being taught in the schools isn't enough and that so many children and teenagers don't have an adequate support systems. I feel for the girls and the families and hope that they will be able to get some assistance (education/counseling) from social services.

Why do you say poets love Facebook? As far as I can see all this technology would just add further complications to my life. Having a blog and reading blogs keeps me busy enough without trying to make sense of Facebook, Bebo, MySpace, Ning and who knows what else.
If someone can give me a very good reason why I should join then maybe...

Catherine, I hear you. Why add one more program. But Facebook is part social network, part restricted community. You're "friends" to the people you want in your circle. Lots of poets, emerging and established, are coming to Facebook.

I like knowing what's going on with other poets in different cities and countries. It helps that I also use it for work, too.

I have dropped Ning, and I've never been on MySpace. I just have my blog and Facebook--that's all I can handle!

CC, I agree. I also think the parents have to take more responsibility here, too.

There are no winners in this story. With any luck, the community will rally around the girls and give them the education and support they need.

Interesting week you've had. How fun to be compiling for a second book.

I recall Juliet aka CGP had a prompt for RWP about trash.

I started a FaceBook for RWP, with Dana's prompting; I'd started one for me, too, on your AWP-round-up advice :-) but haven't done much with it.

I've confessed...

I'm up in the confessional!

Yes, that story is sooo sad! I just don't know why those girls think this is a good thing? I mean, I can barely handle my own two children and I'm 38!

Madonna turns 50? Wow.

Madonna turns 50. *sigh*

And it's being reported that the Gloucester girls did not have a pact. Still, I hope the girls get some guidance.

Deb, Glad you're on Facebook. And I'm glad RWP has a page.

Hi January! I saw your post on Wom-Po and thought I'd stop by to say hello instead of welcoming you via an email. :)

Welcome back to the world of getting to do things other than diapers & the rest. I have twin three year olds, so I totally get that!

I'll add you to my list of blogs to check out. :)

Twins! What a blessing.

Thanks for the kind words, Kim. I'm glad to be a part of the WOMPO community. And I look forward to reading your blog.

YOU feel old?!! Believe me baby you got nuthin' on this old woman! ;)
And I'd love to write a poem about trash - except here we'd probably be more likely to call it rubbish. (The subject title not the product, you understand.)
Facebook for me is another avenue for keeping in touch with family and friends ... haven't had time to link in with much of the poetry networking I'm afraid to say.
